Quick and easy side dishes can really bring out the best in a meal, and these Chili Garlic Green Beans are a perfect example. They pair perfectly with entrees like Asian Steak Bites or Air Fryer Pork Chops, and add fresh flavor to your plate. And they come together in a matter of moments.

I’ve been making these spicy Asian-style beans for a while now. It was something I just threw together one day without thinking much about it. I had some fresh beans from the farmer’s market and was considering Green Beans Almondine, but I didn’t have any almonds.

I did, however, have plenty of garlic and some Thai chili garlic paste. So I tossed them in while sautéing the beans and it was an instant hit. We were absolutely delighted by the results. Spicy, garlicky, and ridiculously easy. What more could you ask for?

Why we love this recipe

  • So easy! Keto side dishes don’t get any easier than this. Just wash and trim the beans, toss them in a pan with hot oil, add the seasonings, and you’re done!
  • Bold Asian flavor: Thai chili garlic sauce is a staple in our house, because a little goes a long way and it lasts for ages in the fridge.
  • Adjust the spiciness: You can play with the spice level to suit you. Want just a little? Add only 1 teaspoon of the sauce? Want a real kick? Add an extra teaspoon!
  • Fresh and healthy: This is a great way to cook green beans so that they stay fresh and crisp, but still nice and tender.
  • Low carb: They make an ideal side dish for low carbs and keto diets!

Ingredient Notes

Fresh green beans, a head of garlic, and a jar of chili garlic sauce on a dark wooden table.Fresh green beans, a head of garlic, and a jar of chili garlic sauce on a dark wooden table.
  • Green beans: Use fresh green beans. They should be plump and crisp and easily trimmed by snapping the ends off.
  • Avocado oil: You can also use olive oil or coconut oil.
  • Garlic: Nothing compares to fresh garlic in this dish. I really do not recommend garlic powder.
  • Chili garlic sauce: You can find this spicy condiment in the International Foods aisle of most grocery stores. Chili Garlic Sauce has zero carbs and is not the same as sweet chili sauce, so make sure you read the labels. You can also use Sriracha. It’s not quite as flavorful and does have a few carbs but it adds only 0.75g per serving.
  • Salt and pepper

Step by Step Directions

  1. Prep the beans: Wash and trim the green beans and drain them well. Pat them dry with a tea towel to reduce any excess moisture.
  2. Sauté the beans: Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat until shimmering. Add the beans and sauté about 5 to 6 minutes, until the beans are bright green and becoming tender.
  3. Finish and serve: Add the garlic and sauté another minute, until becoming fragrant. Then add the chili garlic sauce and sauté another 2 to 3 minutes.
  4. Serve hot: Season with salt and pepper to taste and serve immediately.

Tips for Success

Dry off the green beans as best you can before adding them to the pan. Any residual moisture on them after washing can make them become mushy as they cook.

Do keep in mind that chili garlic sauce is not the same as sweet chili sauce. The Hun Foy brand of chili garlic sauce is widely available in most grocery stores and doesn’t contain any sugar. It is quite concentrated and spicy, so a little goes a long way!
